Large pictures in thin frames...
Here we have a couple of large posters that needed framing in thin white frames. As these frames have minimal strength and the glass in them is pretty heavy, we needed to make a couple of 'sub frames' to hold everything together. A sub frame is simply a strong wooden frame attached to the rear of the main frame out of sight. The long thin Hockney poster was hung in the usual way with a cord across the back. But the large square Richter piece was too heavy for this, so we added two split batons to the top, these are the two strips of aluminium you can see in the photo. Each strip is one of a pair, with the other screwed to the wall, the two parts then lock into each other, securing the work firmly. It's a simple and strong way of hanging heavy pieces.

Vintage Poster
Here we have a vintage washing machine poster which came in as part of an amazing collection of posters that we framed up for a customer recently. This one was a real feature piece (being about 130cm tall) so we opted for a simple, but striking, thick white gesso frame.
A gesso frame is made from bare wood which is covered with a mixture of animal glue and very fine chalk (The gesso), several coats of gesso are applied and once dried its sanded to give a beautiful smooth finish, some primer and a couple of coats of paint finish the job. its a time consuming process, but the end result is beautiful.

The Hobbit
This is a replica of a prop used in the film The Hobbit: An Unexpected journey. We've floated it in a simple black frame which presents it nicely, allowing the viewer to see all the ageing thats been worked into the map...However this map...and the frame...have a magic secret up their Hobbity sleeves...
You'll have to wait for the next post to see what that secret is.... :-)

David Cameron
Today we've been framing up a fantastic set of caricatures of the Prime Minister, David Cameron. These were drawn for the Witney Music Festival in 2011. Each one has been signed by the Prime Minister and we've mounted a copy of a letter of authentication to the back of each frame. They now going on sale to raise money for a local charity, Sobell House. Hopefully they'll raise lots of money for a wonderful cause :-) contact SOTA for further details :-)
